How can we stay grounded in our identity along our journeys as creatives?

In this episode of the Live Creatively podcast, I chat with a dear friend of mine, Nicte Cuevas.

Fast Friends!

This is a photo of Nicte and I when we first connected over lunch in Florida 6 years ago.

I’m grateful for women like Nicte that God has so kindly placed in my life! At lunch that day, we ended up talking at the restaurant for over 3 hours and totally lost track of time.

We later found out as we were leaving that the restaurant had closed and the staff was so nice they just let us stay.

Nicte is such a gift and a bright light! I know you are going to LOVE getting to know her in this special episode of Live Creatively.

We talk about the idea of owning your design or, in other words, really understanding who you are and how we can be more grounded in a strong sense of self as a creatives.

In our conversation, Nicte and I discuss the importance of staying connected to your roots and showing up as your most authentic self. Nicte shares about her culture and heritage, and how she has learned to fully embrace who she is as a creative. She also shares how the process of embracing her Latina roots has empowered her to celebrate her culture through her work as a designer and as an educator.

And, of course, we also talked about motherhood and the challenges that naturally come along with adjusting to new normals as working mothers. And what you won’t hear in this episode, is my daughter waking up in the middle of her nap and crying for over 30 minutes in the background while I tried to comfort her and get her settled again so we could continue recording. The interruption felt so appropriate as Nicte and I talked about navigating REAL life.

What does it mean to Nicte to Live Creatively?

“Living creatively is about allowing yourself to go through the steps to grow internally, where you explore and grow and learn who you are…and celebrate that person that you are. Live your life in a way that you can feel your self-expression is okay. And learn that not everyone will like it, but then there will be people who will love you for who you are. Just keep showing up as you are. Keep experimenting. Keep trying. And it’s okay when you make mistakes because I promise you that those mistakes actually make you a lot stronger than when everything goes ‘pretty and sunshine.’ So, embrace the journey. Really just take a moment to breathe in your experiences and remind yourself as much as you can of all that you’ve accomplished despite your struggles…”
